Wouldn't you like to be a hooker too?

I am SUCH a Happy Hooker these days. While I gave knitting a good solid try last year, I keep floating back over to the crochet side. I fought it for awhile. I think "knitting" sounds a lot trendier than "crocheting." It was a sweet, little old lady that first taught me to crochet (a very sad little chain, that went in about forty different directions).

I've been hooking again lately. I have a lot of spare yarn and a ton that was given to me ... but not colors with which I'm madly in love. So, I started using all of this hodge podge to learn knew stitches, new motifs (ooooo, fancy crochet word!) and other various add-ons. I didn't want to just trash or undo my little bits of scrap work. Instead, I began to create the world's ugliest, funkiest blanket/afghan/quilt thinga-ma-jig on the planet.

VOILA!

Oh, and if you actually took time to look at the details, I'm still adding stuff. The funky blue and black sperm looking design is actually turning into a flower. I did consider adding an egg and going with a fertilization theme for that square ... but the last thing I need is some woman gooshing over my strange creation and asking about that area ... only to have my daughter say, "It's the moment before conception, silly!"

My favorite part is certainly Presh peeking out from behind it.

A funny conception-related tidbit.

When I went to live in the dorm in college, my "sponsor" (sophomore assigned to help a small group of freshman) had decorated our door with a photograph which was 50 or so spoons forming a circle with the scoopy parts all pointed toward the middle.

In our freshman minds we turned it into a picture of conception. So, our motto freshman year was "No spoons!" We were all quite innocent then. By the middle of the year SOMEone could not quote the motto any more. (No, NOT me - honest.)

My first foray into crocheting was also a sperm-looking thing! A short chain with a network of single/double/slip-stitchy stitchies as the "head."

Huh.

I have a crush on that blanket!! I think it is gorgeous!! Awesome that every square makes it there! I am just starting to knit. But I keep pulling all my stitches out!

Now THAT is the kind of thing that becomes a family heirloom. Neat!

Funny--I feel exactly the same way about knitting and crocheting. Knitting sounds so much cooler, and makes much nicer sweaters, but I just can't get into it. I keep going back to crocheting! I've probably made 40 or 50 blankets in the past 12 years, and a couple dozen winter hats, but nothing as completely GORGEOUS as that scrap blanket! You have inspired me to use up my scraps now.

I think it's just lovely. And I also think you should keep the sperm.

Girl.. you keep me cracking up!!! Very nifty with the hook! When you said (I've got sperm to reshape, and all!). I thought is she trying to have another baby or what.. until I but the crocheting story with it!!! wHEW!

Go ahead take a breather.. I'll be going through withdrawls for the next several days... I won't be able to have my 11PM nightly laughs.. or cries or prayers...from your blog!

WE NEED TO GET TOGETHER! I thought about showing up at the pool one day... but then I got scared.. I thought you might post my hairy legs on your site! (haha)

LOVE IT!!!

I'm a knitter myself, but I don't see why I could do the same type of thing. I know I've been saving all my scraps for something!!! :)

Just found your blog, and I had to leave a note to tell you that I LOVE the blanket! How gorgeous is that! My only crocheting project was a set of potholders, long ago. I should bust those hooks out again.
