It's another Backward Edition of Works-for-Me-Wednesday. That means I get to ask a question. I was hoping to answer this on my own and SHARE it for a WWMW, but ... oh well ... wadda' ya' gonna' do?
I want to stop buying shampoo. Even when you can recycle plastic, it doesn't recycle well ... so much of it is still stuck here for eons. Then you have all of the energy consumption to MAKE the shampoo and its packaging, and then ship it all over the world.
Ummmm ... sorry ... I'm rambling.
I WANT TO STOP BUYING SHAMPOO!!
So, I need help. I have done some research online, but have yet to find anything practical and backed by, "I do this and use this and love this." That's where you all come in. Please, doesn't someone out there have a basic and lovable shampoo recipe?
Anyone?

no?
Uh, no. But I do buy 2-in-1 shampoo/conditioner. I've bought it for time saving and cost but now realize that its less packaging, etc.
Do you have your recipe for laundry detergent on here? I'm comparing recipes and want to try it. Thanks in advance!
I've been wanting to do this, too. I found some recipes on Mothering.com but they all said your hair is a greasy, oily mess until it gets use to the baking powder and honey. They all swear, though, that apple cider vinegar makes your hair shine.

Yay! I can help!

No, it is not homemade shampoo BUT this type of shampoo is wrapped in paper not bottled in plastic. Lots of people around here use it and love it.
I also know a mom who just uses baking soda. Her hair is lovely, but she also never uses product on it.
I haven't tried this yet, but I'm so excited to do so!

I've actually been using Kirk's Castille soap for a while now to wash my hair. It works great and there's no bottle. I also had to stop using conditioner. I was having problems with losing a lot of hair. At first I thought it was hormonal because of the last pregnancy/nursing. I tried switching to different brands and varieties, but it didn't matter. Still lots of hair falling out. So I stopped using conditioner just to see what would happen. My hair loss stopped almost immediately and after about a week of adjusting to the change my hair is actually more manageable with more body and texture. And that's another plastic bottle that I don't have to buy and throw away.
But as for making it - I had a couple of recipes that I've been meaning to try. But darn it, I can't seem to remember what I did with them. I know there was even a beer hair rinse in that bunch.
I've wanted to make shampoo bars...but never have gotten to it. The Herbal Hair care website that was given sounds loverly..and the Babyslime website was the other option that I was going to give. Knew Babyslime was popular but I had no idea she was that popular! Hehehe
Thanks for checking out my blog. I don't have an answer to your question but I make my own syrup...so easy.
Well, if you decide to continue purchasing...I LOVE avada products.
I just don't wash my hair, at least not very often. Once a week, unless I put gel in it and it gets nasty.........shampoo lasts forever in my house.
Loving your blog lately btw!
:) Amie :)
OK, so here's my latest concoction that I think might stick with me for a while. I've been using it for a week and I shower about every other day. I am still using store bought conditioner but plan on switching to an apple cider vinegar rinse after my conditioner is gone. A few notes: if you are making your own shampoo so that you use less plastic/bottles, I don't know if this is the best option since there are several ingredients that come in . . . bottles - however, if you are looking for something with out SLS, alcohol, etc. then this might be the poo for you. Also, the original recipe used 1/2 c. sweet almond oil but that was too much oil for my hair. I would possibly use the recipe with more oil as a body wash as it feels great on my skin and I use less lotion post shower - it also would probably be a great poo for my African kiddos someday when our adoption is complete. I have naturally curly hair - someone with stick straight hair or really thin/fine hair might want to try substituting glycerin for all of the almond oil. All that said, here is the recipe:
1/4 c. Honey
1/4 c. sweet almond oil
1/4 c. Food grade glycerin
1 c. Dr Bronner's unscented liquid castille soap
1 1/2 t. Almond Extract
Mix until blended. This is very concentrated so a little goes a long way.
Things to try: add tea tree oil if you have an itchy or flaky scalp. Maybe substitute a different essential oil (probably less) for the almond extract.
Sorry so long!!!
Cheers
if you are looking to do it from scratch this is the way
