I'm eliminating unnecessary packaging from my life, little by little. So, about a month ago, I decided to ditch toothpaste containers. Not toothpaste itself, mind you, but prepackaged, wasteful tubed up toothpaste.
I had some old spice containers laying around (because I have a big shelf where I chunk old plastic stuff to reuse later). I just filled one with baking soda, and there you go.
I wet my brush a little. Do a sprinkle-sprinkle, and brush away.
Now, at first, I was worried about the taste. It was odd, because I'm used to the minty freshness of "regular" toothpaste. The baking soda is actually a bit salty.
Yet, I'm still doing this, and actually prefer it now to my old way of brushing. My teeth feel much cleaner. While there is a tiny bit of salty taste (not the taste bud stripping feeling of minty fresh pastes), you don't have all of the side effects. For instance, I can eat or drink anything after I brush now, without making that funky, scrunched up face I would get if I lathered up with some Aquafresh and then went crazy on some orange juice ... or grapes ... *shiver*!!
I didn't tell anyone in the family I was doing this. My kids noticed and started begging me to use my baking soda shaker. They all use it now, and prefer it to their old stuff, as well.
My husband? Well, he still thinks I'm a hippie freak. But he loves me unconditionally ... maybe because Jesus tells him to ... I can't be sure ...

I'm right there with you! I had to stop using traditional toothpaste after my lips starting peeling off. It was unpleasant to say the least. But I realized that all the chemicals were playing havoc on my face, especially my lips. And I swear my teeth look and feel better now than before. Yea Baking Soda!
What would Jesus brush with?
I would love for somehow a picture to be taken of Michael's face every time you start something new! Kodak moment anyone?
I know the abrasiveness is also good for your teeth, chipping the plaque away. But what about flouride?
Hmmm... I ALWAYS have gross chapped lips. I never thought that it might be from toothpaste! Hmm...
I shall have to try that!
I suspect your husband resembles my husband in so many varied and sundry ways! LOL
You such an inspiration. Love the little spice jar idea!! I'm working on a mouthwash recipe this week--so I'll keep you posted.

Tally, do yourself a google search on the necessity (or lack thereof) of fluoride in our toothpastes.
Not to mention, when you add more whole foods to your diet, and cut out refined sugars (read, read, read labels, because manufacturers are sneaking refined sugars in everything!) ... well, your teeth will not be climbing that uphill battle.
Thanks Christine! That reminds me of my last conversation with my vet.
Me: "What? My dog doesn't have any cavities? What a good boy!!"
Dr: "Um, dogs don't get cavities."
Me: "Huh?! Why not?"
Dr: "Because they don't eat sugar."
Me: "......." stunned silence followed by deep pondering of universal truth.
Got it! Thx.
Your comment about your husband was just too funny. The whole time I'm reading your posting I'm thinking I wonder what the heck her husband thinks of all these changes? Then you answered me. See, mine would have strangled me by now. ;) He thinks the soap making class I'm taking is weird enough! He wants to know why we can't just buy soap at the store like regular people?
Are you telling me that my husband is not the only one out there resisting greener living??? :-0 I'm so glad to know that I'm not alone!!
I used baking soda for a while until a dentist I went to told me that it strips the enamel from your teeth if you use it more than once or twice a week. How about you be my guinea pig, and if you're enamel stays put, I'm going back!! ;-)
