Are any of you NOT aware of the whole Subway/homeschooling we-have-nothing-better-to-do controversy?
Subway started a contest in January (that's right - four months ago - makes us homeschoolers appear to be really on task, now, doesn't it?). You could write an essay to enter your school (a bunch of kids that do their learning together in a big building) to win $5000 worth of work-out equipment.
Homeschoolers are excluded. They put that part in italics.
Now, granted, Subway's PR people are probably getting raked over the coals, because they should've realized that the italicized sentence was going to spark a fire under the rears of tens of thousands of home educators. I actually feel sorry for whoever it is that had the job of foreseeing the firestorm. The homeschooling community is ripping them a new one, and taking away valuable time from prepping Jarod for his next commercial.
What do I think about all of this?
I don't give a crapola that homeschoolers were excluded from a contest that was meant to benefit a school. In fact, I would like to see Subway discriminate even farther, and ONLY make the contest open to public schools with poverty levels over 70%. That would thrill me.
I chose to homeschool. I chose to take a route that is not traditional in this country. We are excluded from some things. I'm cool with that. It was my choice to put my family outside of the cookie-cutter box.
I love it that the throngs of homeschoolers come out in droves when there is injustice, but I just don't see this as falling into that category ... at all. Should companies not be allowed to have contests that cater to traditional school settings? Absolutely not. I am so very lucky to be able to stay home and have a support system so that I can teach my kids. Not everyone can do that. Some of them want to and don't have a choice ... will never have a choice.
Give them the treadmill. I can walk around my block ... with my kids ... at anytime of day. My kids could spend countless hours reworking and editing an essay for a contest - make it their whole focus. Is there enough time in the day to even list the opportunities that our kids have that traditionally schooled kids miss out on? We all know how that comparison would come out.
I'm not going to gripe over work-out equipment - providing a healthy alternative to kids in a group setting, some who get no healthy activities or options at home. This contest was fair and upfront from the very beginning. Its intent was good. I support it, and hope that some kid out there reaches their ultimate potential and brings pride to their campus. Yea for them!
There are some saying that this isn't about homeschoolers, but it is actually an attack on Christians.
**whispering**
Hey. Psst. Come over here. Way in the corner. Shhhhh. I have a secret for you ...
All homeschoolers are not conservative Christians. Now, hold on to your hat, because this one may really get you - but not all homeschoolers are even Christians! Seriously! Shhhhhh. Keep it to yourself.
Can we just let it go? Focus your energy on the next contest, which Subway will now make sure is available to every breathing being under the age of 18 - probably including fetuses, pets and plants. All I have to say is that after all of this belly-aching, some homeschool kid better darn well win it!

Yep. My thoughts exactly. We are spending our bellyaching currency on irrelevant issues when we should be saving up our juice for the time when our rights are seriously threatened.
It is nice to see that the homeschoolers, who I feel in my area are way radical, still have a level head about them. You have put a new faith in homeschool folks for me. I am a Christian, and a parent, who believes in public ed., as I am a result of it. In fact, "it" is what I do. Unfortunately, what we see in my realm is homeschoolers coming into public ed for the most part well behind where other students their age are. That is not true of all, and just reading your blog lets me know that your kidlings are well taken care of. To each his/her own.
As another perosn who is in public ed. let me just reassure you that all public school teachers are not out there trying to brainwash children into thinking the same way. In fact, most teachers despise what is happening to schools and are sticking with it just to be a voice of reason (not that we're listened to). Also the vast majority of teachers I have had the privledge of working with are very committed Christians who meet weekly to pray for our schools and children. Believe it or not we all want the same thing, to educate our children to be productive citizens in society.
Good thoughts, but no more anonymous comments, guys and gals. Lets own our words.
I agree...let it go. I wasn't offended by the contest. Their contest, they can make the rules.
I do have some friends that contacted Subway & expressed their displeasure with the contest. I was priviledged enough to read the responses & Subway was extremely gracious in their response.

Girl, I couldn't have said it better myself! My sentiments exactly!
Homeschoolers everywhere...LET IT GO!!
Thank you!
I have been scratching my head for over a week wondering what exactly the problem is.
Just a bunch in whiney folks if you ask me. I would have liked to see the equipment only go to a school in certain poverty levels as well. Do the rich schools with fancy eqipment really need more? *sigh*
Glad to know I can eat Subway guilt free now. My favorite thing about your blog is #1 the milk pic o' the week (I nursed till pg again for a total of 59 months. YEAH BABY!!) and #2 your profile pic. If that is not actually you we may or may not be able to be friends. I would be a bff to any woman who has that tat. SO stinkin cool!!
Love the pets and plants. Too funny. I doubt the PR people would let them win if they did include them at this point! Isn't that what we always are afraid of at fast food joints when we complain about the food? That guy flipping the burger can spit an awfully big loogie. LOL
flag waving from Doha Qatar
Hooray Christine from an American Homeschooler in Qatar! Didn't we get away from public schools to not have to fight all of the time with the school boards, teachers and even other students because we care so deeply for our kids, their character development and their educations?
I could go other places with anger, christians, and the goverment, hahaha, but I'll stop there :) Well written and it's yet another fast food industry in America looking to attract yet more kids to eating there.
I had so many of these same thoughts girl! I just knew if I put them in writing I would be blasted and... well.... I am a big chicken, so...
There are also friends of ours who homeschool that are in scouting with us that are not Christians, won't go to church AT ALL but our oldest doesn't let that stop him from working on merit badges with one of the boys. People have all kinds of reasons for homeschooling and many are not for Christian reasons...
Thanks for sharing this post. :) Have a great weekend!
Good for you, Christine.
It looks like the sensible Homeschoolers are finally coming out of the woodwork.
I agree with you on this one, Christine. What would I do with $5 K worth of exercise equipment, when I have paths and mountains and canyons to walk in?
I choose to homeschool, but that choice could change with the needs and desires of my homeschooled kid.
It is not a bad thing for a company to do something to benefit schools--which are places where many children spend a lot of their time.
And I still like the Subway Veggie Sandwich with Vinegar and Oil on it.
No matter what happens to Jarrod.
Signed--
One of those Non-Christian Homeschoolers
