Still pimping the electric car

Guess what I learned this week.

We're getting closer and closer to having a plug-in hybrid on the market.

While, yes, electric cars move the energy consumption off of gasoline and onto electricity - as things are today, they will consume 40% less energy than their gas guzzling counterparts. As electric power becomes cleaner, that percentage will climb.

Right now, as things are, if electric cars are charged in the evenings (when the grids grow dark), tens of MILLIONS of cars could be charged every day without having to build one new power source.

Yeah, read that again.

Yet, if we do have to build more sources for electric power (cause we will), it is cleaner and still more efficient than oil. It's a great direction, and we're actually moving that-a-way!

Check out NOVA's "Car of the Future: Engineering for the Environment" (now on your Netflix Watch Instantly choices!).

Have you watched the documentary "Who Killed The Electric Car"???!? If not, I would highly recommend it!

Too bad they are mostly cars that my family won't fit in - bring on the 12 passenger van!

Seconding Kim's recommendation for "Who killed the electric car." Must see.

One major point they make, in addition to yours, is that it's far far easier to monitor and regulate the emissions and standards of 20 or so power plants than it is to regulate millions of vehicle tail pipes. And that it's easier to mix in alternative energy sources (wind, solar, etc) through that level than to, say, suddenly start adding something to each car that has wind/solar convertors on it. We'll see if it ever happens again.
