"I don't agree with everything she says, but ..."

I've found a funny common denominator many times my blog is sited on other blogs. It usually starts with a little something like, "I don't agree with everything she says, but ..."

It's not just me. I read it a lot.

Why do we do that? Heck, I've done it before. I've become more aware of it over the years. We have this fear that someone might think we endorse an entire person by linking to their blog.

As if any of us could endorse an entire person. Heck, I don't always agree with my own husband (hi, Neil - thanks for triggering this post!).

So, why do we fear such a thing?

I think it falls into the same category as why we lie about our age. If you tell someone how old you are, are you magically going to look different? Will they see you differently? Treat you differently? Respond to you differently?

No, they won't. They know you. They have witnessed "you." You are you.

Some of us fear that by connecting with someone who doesn't believe the same way we do spiritually, people may see us as confusing ... or a Democrat ... or sinful ... or wishy-washy ... pro-choice ... or liberal ...

No, they won't. They know you. They have witnessed "you." You are you.

Some of us are afraid to share the blog of a highly conservative gal, because we're afraid people may think we're a Christian ... or Republican ... or anti-feminist ... or pro-life ... or a doormat ...

No, they won't. They know you. They have witnessed "you." You are you.

People who find me interesting hang out with me or "read me." None of us have everything in common. We don't have to preface each other with fine print.

I myself am shy of the soapbox. I like to preach it till someone challenges me, then I'm all..."Oh sorry! Of course I could be wrong!" I really like your last sentence. Sometimes I get a little too caught up in the world of pc.....since I'm a people-pleaser.
Keep it up with your strong views! I love 'em.

I'll never preface you Christine!! I started reading you for the bits we have in common, but I keep reading because I enjoy your unique take on life in general. I don't really get as much out of hanging out with people just like me. Keep mixing it up! We'll hopefully take it all in and add our own ideas all the while.

Heck, Tally is one of my bf's in real life and we are ENTIRELY different. I love it :). xo

You are right. But we are afraid of hurting others feelings too.

Interesting that you would post this. I recently linked to an article in my 'Is thithing biblical' post and I almost did the very same thing. The article discussed the point I was making, very well, but then the author made some statements that I did not agree with. I almost wrote, 'This author states my point well, although he makse some other statements that I don't agree with'. But, I chose to let people come to their own conclusions and so I stopped with, 'This author states it well'. I decided that people were gonna make judgements on that post no matter what I wrote!

I find you interesting and "read you", but I do have to preface you with fine print. It says "no, I don't actually know her, but I love her blog!" :)

Oh man, I could preface my whole blog-roll that way. It's a big old gay straight liberal conservative christian atheist communist capitalist love fest.

The best part, though? When bloggers who I love find each other and fall in blog love. This is especially amusing when they are very different from one another.

It seems like the kind of thing you might get a laugh out of at the end of a long day.
