Got rhythm. Got cups. Who could ask for anything more?

I'm always looking for things to do with my kids that will bring us together, challenge them, and maybe even bring a little healing or improvement in areas of struggle. This week I whipped out an oldie, but a goodie.

The cup game (a.k.a. the cup beat).

I can't say enough about how wonderful this is for us. I'm also kicking myself for not having thought of it sooner. Who would've thought that the painfully annoying game we played in the cafeteria those many years ago would have therapeutic value!

It challenges all of us through:

Coordination
Teamwork
Counting (musically)
Concentration
Sensory stimulation

Throw in that it's really fun (or when a cup goes flying - really FUNNY), and the kids think they are so crazy cool to be able to do it.

There are more videos showing this little beat than you would ever have time to watch. So, do some YouTube searches and get to crackin'!

this video gave my 6 and 3 year old great laughs. it also brought back wonderful high school youth group memories. we always did it to rich mullins' "screen door".

I never did this one...I do remember a cup passing game "Riki Tiki Bear" that we did at camp.

No videos with exactly the same tune I learned, but this will give you an idea of how to play and mix up the passing...+

Summer, so far I've found no other Blackwellites that have done it - maybe it's more of a Texas thing.

Cammie, I'm sure we weren't annoying AT ALL - with those clanky cups on the Veda Hodge tables ... and all that linoleum and cinder block to stifle the noise. :)

No, Summer, I have lived in Texas MOST of my life and I have never heard of it either....

The boys LOVED it and were laughing as the boys started messing up and chunking cups at each other. LOL We will have to try this. :)

Hey Christine,

I've seen this game, but never actually learned it before. I'm kind of lacking in the rhythm department, but after practicing for the last hour (thanks for the video, LOL)... I think I've got it!

I know what I'll be teaching the kids after dinner tonight. heehehe

I remember playing this at FBC, Eastland. Loved it! And you're right, they are doing it exactly right in the video.

The cup game!!!! I could do that hours! The rhythm is playing in my head as I type this! Great memories - yeah for small town creativity and no malls!

YES! I learned that when I was in High School at youth group stuff and have loved teaching it to teens too. When we moved here, nobody knew it either!

that is so fun! I'm not sure we're quite coordinated enough to do that yet, but it's worth remembering for sure! I loved playing that game. I want to be one of the cool parents who teaches her kids the games before they learn them somewhere else...
