Wait ... "love" is not a strong enough word.
I adore my life.
The people who fill it up are the reason it is so very rich.
In our RV park, we currently have families participating in the Texas State Junior High Rodeo Finals, several contract workers doing the exact work but for competing companies, my two retired couples who make me chuckle regularly, several weekender's leaving today now that the holiday is ending, and one of my favorite nomads who just painted his toenails green, dyed his beard blue and sported his brand new kilt for me while helping us attempt to work on a dryer (LOVE me some Sam!). Needless to say, Mr. Green Toes and I joke a lot about being freaks. Yet, it hit me yesterday, as I walked through the park and reveled in this crazy eclectic gathering ... we are all freaks.
The retiree may think the kilt guy is a freak.
The pressed khaki pants dude may think the cowboy is a freak.
The gal with the perfect manicure may think the dreaded chic is a freak.
The nomad may think the 9-to-5er is a freak.
But ... there are the growing few ... those who open their eyes and their heart to the beauty and the amazement around them ... they see no freaks. They see people. They see variety. They find their greatest treasures in the oneness underneath the differences.
Because we're all freaks.
We're all wonderful.
Let your freak flag fly, whatever it may be.
Freaks make the world go round.

Christine, I try SO HARD to let my freak flag fly, but I don't know what it looks like!!!
I'm going to sew a nice dress from my freak flag and wear it daily. ;)
Girl my freak flag flys even when there's no wind!
Great Post!
love this post. love it. freaks all, indeed.
my kid sister (25 this month) and her boyfriend (33, has been train hopping for 17 years) get around the country by hopping freights. they came through not too long ago and think that us land-based people that work and pay bills are the freaks. Said "train" (yes, her boyfriend calls himself Train) "The world would be a happier place if everyone took the time to learn how to live off the grid and off the government's radar"
ok, Train. Whatever you say. Let me know when you get busted and are in jail for 30 days because you train hop. Freak.
lol
I actually said something similar to that statement and he said, "hey, 30 days of a soft bed, warm in winter, cool in summer and three squares a day. heaven"
certifiable freakishness. But my sis is happy so whatevs.

LOVE this!!!
This is for Jennie, if she happens to see it: How in the world did your sister meet Train?
Eli asked me the other day why I'd put that new hole in my ear - his logic was if it hurts why do it - and I told him my body is like my own canvas and I wanted to decorate it - body art :) - that sweet boy looked at me like I'd flipped my lid - cracked me up!
I ran until my toenail fell off.
That's all I got. ;-)
Thanks for checking out my blog...Freakyness looks different for everyone - - I think YOU pull off those dreads in a freakishly fabulous way!!
Pretty close to that! I do enjoy a huge variety of people, and the problem is that I worry occasionally I'm "going out" on them...or being slightly dishonest...except there is just so much bredth (I'd like to say depth, but am maybe a wannabe) to my personality....Yes! I can sit with the ultra-conservative homeschooling moms and feel I fit right in! But then, when I'm with the whole-grain hippie types I can go there, too. But, I really love almost everyone.... Just can't stand negativity. Or dishonesty.
It's always annoyed me that there are only some proper ways to "be yourself" (because it would not be letting your freak flag fly, exactly) though. Green toenails and a blue beard would be considered a heck of a lot more appropriate than if I chose to dress as though it were 1904. I mean, THAT would be ME. But that would be TOO weird. Expressing your, "Excuse me, but I was born in the wrong century"-ness, is just not acceptable. Darn.
And admit it, even you would think, "That woman is STRANGE."
Annie,
Ummm, no.
Would not think that's weird, because you love it.
I've never "fit in a box" ... so I've always been the freak. I may have a dozen children, and I may have homeschooled for 20 years, but we so don't fit in the box of the "large homeschooling family". Oh. My. No. We gave up the denim jumpers years ago.
In the evangelical churches we've always attended, we are "the conservative ones" ... because we homeschool, don't watch t.v., have rules for our kids, etc...
In the homeschooling community, we are the "liberal ones" ... because we listen to all types of Christian music, wear jeans, allow our kids to take classes and play sports at the "evil public schools", etc...
In our "white, conservative, small town America", we are the freaks because we ... have a dozen children, adopted 2 black children (oh. yes. we live in a town known for much racism ... even in 2010), are quite a "rowdy" bunch (we like to have FUN).
Now, we are in the process of moving to a very liberal little island (2,000 residents). Oh. My. The differences are staggering, and we LOVE it. The island community is filled with FREAKS, but everyone respects everyone else. Not many "conservatives". Not many homeschoolers. Not many blacks (one other family has adopted black children). But, guess what?, we are LOVED, we are ACCEPTED, we are RESPECTED, even if there is NO ONE LIKE US. So cool!
We're planning a Road Trip to Texas. I think we'd better come stay at your park.
Laurel :)
