Magical Milk Pic-o-the-Week
"If a picture speaks a thousand words, then this one speaks volumes. Zoe came into this world 12 weeks early, weighing 2 lbs. 9 oz. Because of her prematurity, she was not able to nurse. She had not yet developed the ability to suck, swallow, and breathe. She did, however, get Mommy's milk because I pumped it for her, and she took it through a feeding tube. In the absence of actual nursing, NICU mommies are encouraged to hold their babies skin-to-skin. Doing so allows mother and baby to bond, and it helps mom with her milk production. This picture features our first bonding experience. She was a week old. As for the magic of a mother's milk, Zoe left the hospital at 10 weeks of age, weighing 7 lbs. 15 oz."
